Comments on “Casablanca”When I first watch the movie called "Casablanca", which is considered as one of the most classic movies all over the world, depicting an impressive story about what a hero was supposed to act when encountering the dilemma that he had no choice but to decide to either behave gentle like a patriot or a limited and narrow minded person who always conceived of revenge because of being hurt by love under a war background. And I would say yes, this movie as a masterpiece stands the test of time, being passed generation to generation and still remaining a great attraction to contemporaries nowadays. First of all, what appeals to me is its special theme in which love, patriotic and obligation--all of them are twisted and tangled each other. This movie was launched by Hollywood during World War Two, talking about an American named Rick Blaine opened a very prevailing nightclub in Casablanca and he owned two precious permission cards which was indispensable for those who wanted to escape from European cities ruled by Nazi Germany to the US. One day, antifascist leader named Victor Laszlo and his wife Ilsa came to the club planned to get permission cards with the help of Rick. However, when Rick found that Ilsa was just his lover a few years ago, he hesitated. After the misunderstanding between them was clarified and Rick decided to help the couple escapes from Casablanca. At last, he shot a Nazi officer named Strasser who tried to hinder from the couple’s leave, staring at the departure of his lover. What a moving scene! On the one hand, this movie reminds people of the cruelty of wars and alerts us not to forget about how pain and discomfort a war brings to us and how precious peace is. I am sure that even those who have not experienced war times will be definitely affected and moved by the pictures the movie shows to us. For example, there is a scenery that in the club, the Nazi officer Strasser conducted his underlings to sing a song about their so called glory aggressions while the antifascist leader Laszlo encouraged the rest of common people in that club to sing “La Marseillaise”—French national chorus. And it turned out to be a contest and battle between good and evil and of course, the former won. What a meaningful scene. On the other hand, in addition to the patriotic scene, what shock me most are those that are relevant to strong love during the war. Accompanied by the leading rhyme of the song “as time goes by”, the leading character Rick and Ilsa met in a room that implied the climax’s coming. I hardly can control my emotion any longer because Rick eventually showed his generous love to Ilsa and sense of responsibility to beat evil of Nazi. There is no denying that it indeed encouraged lots of people during their hard times. In a conclusion, I believe that this movie is worthy to watching and needed to be re-enjoyed couples of times because of what it conveys referring to a profound inspiration about bravery, obligation and love that a true man should possess. Comments on "The Tiger"William Blake (1757-1827) was regarded in his time as very strange. Although nowadays people view tiger as a kind of symbol of wild animal, I still feel confused when I first notice that a famous poet who lived in 19th century had described it and as considered it as a sign. But the question is what does it exactly mean about the emblem? In spite of existing confusion that we do not confirm what the writer would want to convey to us, it is still evident that the tiger he describes is powerful and mighty. First, Blake's spelling in the title "The Tiger" at once suggests the distinguished or alien quality of the beast. The memorable opening couplet (pair of rhyming lines) points to the contrast of the dark "forest of the night" and the intense "burning" brightness of the tiger's coloring: It seems that Blake depicts with a pair of painter's eyes. Then, Blake presents a question that embodies the theme: Who created the tiger? Was it the kind and loving God who made the lamb? Or was it Satan? Blake presents his question in the following sentences (What immoral hand or eye/ could frame thy fearful symmetry?) Also, Blake asks in the poem that where the fire in the tiger's eyes originates. It seems that a brave person (or maybe the God) seizes this fire and puts it into the tiger. Here, I remember that Prometheus stole fire from the gods in order to bring brightness to men in Greek myth. What a similar coincidence! Besides, the poet is amazed by the complicated inner drive of the tiger and the mighty heart beats of strength so that he also thinks how the brain of such a kind of animal is created: "What the hammer...in what furnace...what the anvil?" At last, the writer realizes that God made all the creatures on earth. However, he also bewilders: Is tiger really created by the God? If it is true, why does the God who creates the gentle lamb also create the terrifying tiger? The poem ends appropriately with the same question with which it started, but the change of verb from "could" to "dare" makes it much stronger. The poem does not so much explore the question that what really tiger is, as the poet tries to tell us what the true meaning of tiger is from a perspective of a zoologist or an observer. I think, Blake considers the tiger as a masterpiece of the God which exists on the earth with amazing combination of beauty and strength.
